Cobra is planning to release a new Vedetta Series of Radar Detectors for 2012

Cobra claims the new Vedetta series will be the Standard in Radar/Laser Detection and will have a 30 percent increase in performance over Cobra's current flagship models. The Vedetta line will include a 2.4-inch TFT color LCD display on a multi-axis hinge and a ball-socket suction cup mounting bracket, which will allow the driver to mount the detector virtually anywhere on the windshield or dash of their automobile. The display can be rotated 270 degrees vertically and 60 degrees horizontally.

In addition to setting a new benchmark among detection systems for form factor and driver ergonomics, Cobra offers an integrated GPS receiver and free, lifetime access to its AURA(TM) national database of speed/red-light cameras and known speed trap locations.

Features listed for the new product line include:

Maximum range and selectivity for advance warnings on all radar and laser guns currently utilized in the U.S.
Integrated GPS Receiver and AURA Speed/Red-Light Camera and Known Speed Traps database alerts the driver well in advance of location-based threats with coverage throughout the U.S. and Canada

The new Cobra Vedetta series is expected to be available nationwide in Q2 with pricing from $199.95 to $299.95. My guess it that we will see this in late Q2 so it can be a few months before we finally get our hands on one to test the manufactures claims. If there really is a 30% increase over the current top of the line Cobra models it could push Cobra into a higher performance bracket and possibly top Whistler on our Best Radar Detector 2012 list in the under $200 category.

Escort Live - Not taking off as expected?

I must say that I was very excited about Escort Live when it first shipped in December. The potential for this product is enormous but it relies on other users to report live radar and laser alerts. The problem is from my experience that there seems to be no one besides myself even using it in my State. I know its hard to believe but since using it I have never seen a Live alert.

I also find it inconvenient to use the Live Smartcord and much prefer to use the hardwired power cord instead so at this point I have stopped using Escort Live and will try again in the future when they come out with Live for their hard wired customers. Hopefully by then there will be many more users to the system which will make it much more beneficial.

I also use a Beltronics Sti-R Plus in my primary vehicle because its the Best Radar Detector ever made but again no Escort Live for remote mounted units either. Hopefully soon.

With the new and improved Beltronics Sti Magnum being out many Sti Driver customers are upset especially if they recently purchased the Sti Driver since the Sti Magnum has improved performance. Beltronics is offering any Sti Driver owner even if it was purchased a few years back an option to upgrade to the new Sti Magnum for $99, This is a great deal considering the improvement between the old and new model.

New Escort 8500x50 Black Radar Detectors

Escort has recently released an update to their 8500x50 radar detector called the Escort 8500x50 Black. Besides the immediately noticeable black colored case the Escort 8500x50 Black has a new lens which also gives the new version some performance increase. Escort has claimed a 40% performance increase but they do not specify where they get this figure from.

In testing the new Escort 8500x50 Black there is some increase over the original 8500x50 but its definately not 40% better. I think Escort is comparing it to average competitors in the $100 to $200 price range and not directly saying its 40% better than the original model. Overall they did not increase the price with this new release so if buying a new detector definately get the black over the older model.

The Escort 8500x50 has always been a solid performer and one of the best radar detectors under $300. I am courious if they will revise the Beltronics RX65 with the new lens as well. Right now we still like the Beltronics RX65 as the top performer in the price range since it also offers voice alerts and KU Band support at the same price.

New Beltronics STi Magnum Radar Detector

Lots of improvements going on with both Escort and Beltronics lately. The last improvement is the refresh of the Beltronics Sti Driver and its now called the Beltronics Sti Magnum. From the outside not much has changed to the design but Beltronics is stating that the new Sti Magnum has an Amazing 60% Performance Improvement.

We expect to have them in stock in a few days and we will test them to see just how much better this new Sti Magnum is over the older model. In any case even if the improvement in performance is minor it would still be the lowest cost completely invisible radar detector!

Escort Redline or Escort 9500ix Radar Detector?

Both are great detectors but they are designed for different uses. The Escort Redline is more geared for people that will mostly use the radar detector on the highway. Its also immune to all radar detector detectors so many commercial drivers opt for the Redline and also those users that plan to use radar detectors where they are banned such as Virgina & Washington DC and parts of Canada also love the Redline.

The Escort 9500ix while not immune to all radar detector detectors does however come with great benefits having an embedded GPS antenna. Using the GPS antenna the detector is smart enough to mark false alerts and memorize the frequency and the GPS location of the false alert so that it will never alert you to those false alerts in the future. It can also give you advanced notice of red light cameras and fixed speed cameras.

Both of these detectors are listed in the Best Radar Detectors of 2011-2012, If you live or travel frequently through areas where detectors are illegal and you plan to use a radar detector get the Escort Redline, If not the 9500ix will give you more for your money.

On our site we rate the Escort 9500ix as the best overall windshield mounted radar detector. There are lots of best radar detectors for certain uses for example the Escort Redline is our best detector to use in areas such as Virginia or Washington DC but overall the Escort 9500ix would be the best detector for the majority of users.

The Beltronics GX65 would be very close the 9500ix but for only a few bucks more the Escort 9500ix adds the auto learn feature for automatically marking and ignoring false alerts which is a manual process on the Beltronics GX65. What is the difference between the Beltronics RX65 & Beltronics GX65 Radar Detector

We get asked this question almost daily so I figured I would spend a few moments to post the answer to the blog. The Beltronics GX65 is based on the same platform as the Beltronics RX65 so when comparing the radar & laser performance they are virtually identical. The GX65 adds an internal GPS antenna which basically takes the RX65 to new level with great advantages.

Having GPS the GX65 can alert you to red light cameras and fixed speed cameras by comparing your GPS location to the pre-installed coordinates of cameras across the US & Canada. The internal database is updateable via any PC computer with a USB port. The 2nd advantage is the ability to mark and ignore false alerts. The GX65 can memorize your GPS location and the frequency of the false alert so the next time you pass the false the detector will not alert you unless it see's some new activity at that same location. This makes the GX65 much more quieter than the RX65.

We have been waiting for the Beltronics Sti-R Plus for over a year and its finally here. The Beltronics Sti-R Plus takes off where the old Sti-R left off. The original Sti-R was a great unit with incredible range and was the perfect stealth unit. The Bel Sti-R Plus however adds a gps antenna for marking and ignoring false alerts and also for advanced warning of red light cameras and fixed speed cameras. The new model also offers TSR which is needed for those that travel on highways in major citys and are tired off all the false alerts from those traffic sensors.
We will get one installed soon and we will report back with a test drive... I cant wait!

Compare Escort 8500x50 and Beltronics RX65

We get this question daily and both these detectors the Escort 8500x50 and the Beltronics RX65 share the same antenna and performance is almost identical. Escort & Beltronics merged quite some time ago and their newer detectors share the same technology but there are usually slight feature differences between the models.

When coming to these two models we like the Beltronics RX65 better because you get more detector for the same price. The Beltronics RX65 radar detector adds Voice Alerts and also supports the international KU Band. Voice alerts in my opinion make a detector much less annoying when an alert goes off since it will beep to get your attention and then tell you in a voice what band it is picking up. I like this much better than just a constant beeping tone.

As far as the KU Band is concerned there is no KU Band radar guns used in the US or Canada but if you travel internationally its worth having. When both detectors are priced the same it only makes sense to get the Beltronics RX65 in our opinion.

New Cobra iRadar Radar Detector

Cobra has been quiet lately and then all of a sudden they announce the new Cobra iRadar a new type of radar detector designed for iPhone users. I have to save the iphone app is very slick.

It is still relatively new and we have not tested the performance on this new unit yet. Once we take a test drive with it we will report back. When looking at features its packed with features including red light and fixed camera locations, all band radar and laser detection, and lots of other goodies.

Move Over Law (New Law in some states)

With the economoy still struggling and deficits rising a trend seems to be emerging with more and more tickets being written. There is a law which over 71% of americans dont know exists.

Its Called the Move Over Law, If a patrol car or emergency vehicle is pulled over to the side of the road with their lights flashing, you have to change to the next lane (away from the stopped vehicle) or slow down by 20 mph. Every state except Hawaii , Maryland, NY and D.C. has this law and the fines are not cheap.

"More than 150 U.S. law enforcement officers have been killed since 1997 after being struck by vehicles along America's highways, according to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund," according to information posted on the group's Web site, "www.moveoveramerica.com.

Just be aware of this law and use common sense when passing a patrol car or emergency vehicle on the side of the road. If you do not change lane or slow down by 20 MPH it could cost you a ticket as high as $500 or more.

We get asked this question daily and here is the simple answer. The Escort 8500x50 Red & Escort 8500x50 Blue radar detectors are exactly the same with the exception of a red or blue display. We as most people question why such a huge price difference of $40 and we are told the Blue LED's cost more money to produce. Our personal opinion is save the $40 and get the 8500x50 Red unless your vehicle interior is Blue and you really want your radar detector to match.
